Attributed to Mother Teresa as seen one her wall in Calcutta, Written by Kent M. Keith (Part 1)
and JUST DO IT ANYWAY, Written by Janet Takahashi (Part 2, below)
People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered;
Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, People may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives;
Be Kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies;
If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you;
Be honest and frank anyway.
What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight;
If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous;
Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow;
Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough;
Give the world the best you’ve got anyway.
You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God;
It was never between you and them anyway.
(PART 2: by Janet Takahashi)
JUST DO IT ANYWAY
People around you are over-scheduled and wanting impossible deadlines;
Be grateful for work anyway.
Friends and family are competing for every bit of extra time they can squeeze out of you and wonder what you do all day;
Do what you love anyway.
You are criticized for always having ink under your fingernails and paint on your shirt;
Produce art anyway.
If you are creative, you are considered “different” but have a line outside your door of people asking for free advice;
Charge what you’re worth and give some free advice anyway.
You have an imagination that soars and people around you are always trying to pop that invisible balloon;
Make magic anyway.
Open your eyes and your heart, allowing in all the patterns and rhythms in the world to be stored in your sub-conscious and released as you sit at your drafting table wanting one more brilliant idea;
Ask for brilliant ideas anyway.
Tools of the trade: ink, brushes, paint, pencils, and pens are only tools to make marks. It’s easy to forget that the real energy that moves them comes from the soul and out through your fingertips;
Seek out new tools anyway.
Time you spend nourishing your art fills your spirit and makes you happy, know that time is sacred. Cherish it;
Share your spirit with the world anyway.
Bring no harm to the earth or any other living thing. Be kind to yourself even if a letterform is wobbly, and always do your best work;
Live with Nature and practice, practice anyway.
When you are looking for excuses because today the sun did not come out, you can’t find the right pen, you only have an hour; Pick up a tool and write anyway, paint anyway, draw anyway, create anyway. Because, you see, in the final analysis it is all between you and them; your muse, your Spirit Guide and the Divine One who know and sit at the four corners of the earth shouting down, “JUST DO IT ANYWAY!”
